Clark
Ted E.P.

Clark is another fine, weird artist from Warp.

With his work he’s managed to find a place in the latest generation of innovative dance/electronica, and it’s absolutely no surprise how he did it. This EP showcases exactly what he is capable of and really demonstrates to his contemporaries how you bend music into weird new shapes.

It opens with the title track, a fuzzy and often dissonant track. The keyboards warble and sound reminiscent of how a videogame soundtrack would sound if it were put in a washing machine. It’s fairly typical of IDM, but seeing as there’s so much variety in the genre then Ted is still in a world of its own.

The track is followed by an absolutely astounding remix by Bibio. Where the original is abrupt, electronic and calculated, the remix is completely organic. Bleeps and bloops are replaced with ambient guitar musings and backward sampling. It sounds like a folk guitar quartet experimenting with reverse effects pedals in the very late evening.

The standout track, however, has to be Springtime Epiphany as it twinkles meanderingly until it resolves in strange circuit-bending noises and leaves the listener in a trancelike state. It then ends with Cremation Drones – which is exactly the impression the title should give you.

The CD as a whole is highly recommended for late night wind-downs after a stressful day – except for maybe Cremation Drones, which will probably make you seasick after a few minutes of listening to it.
