Jack Cheshire
Allow It To Come On

Jack Cheshire is the next in a long line of young acoustic folk singer-songwriters, following the likes of Nick Drake and Damien Rice.

Although described as psychedelic on his MySpace page, it's hard to find much evidence of it on his album Allow It To Come On. Maybe he saves it for his live performances.

The album was recorded in his bedroom in his North London flat, again very reminiscent of Damien Rice who recorded his first album O mainly in a farmhouse in Ireland. When the skies opened in July 2007, part of it was captured on his final song The Old Easy Way with welcoming arms.

Cheshire has a slurry-voiced, melancholic sound, with beautiful, haunting, repetitive riffs and melodies that catch you humming and tapping along. The song, Memory Gland, soon gets you swaying after several seconds of the repetitive guitar riff and hypnotising melody.

This is a great chill out album and Cheshire clearly has talent, but it would be interesting to see where he takes his second album, as this is too much like Rice. However, if you are really into Damien Rice and the latest acoustic chill out music, then this is for you. If, like me, you enjoy reading a book whilst listening to gentle background music, this is a great album to have. Jack Cheshire isn’t as good as Rice, but will no doubt give him a good run for his money in 2008, so listen out.

It's hard to go wrong with acoustic music, it's one of those genres that you can listen to whilst having a natter and not really pay much attention to. As similar as this album is to most acoustic albums out already, it definitely grows on you.
