Taio Cruz
Departure

Taio Cruz goes from Gnarls Barkley via Boys II Men’s vocal harmonies in an eventual musical pattern that leaves much to be desired.

Reading like an airline departure board, Taio Cruz, known more for producing and songwriting than actually making his own music has served up a weak slice of his own imitation brand hip-hop in the form of minimised beats.

His debut album, and as the title states a departure from his usual roles, feels like he’s realised that too much of his work has been taken away from him and he suddenly feels the need to put more of a stamp on the world - and this is his chance to claw back some notoriety.

The soft piano intro to I’ll Never Love Again tries to trick you into thinking that this album is something more but no sooner do those words cross your mind, the drumbeat kicks in and makes you think otherwise.

Add the problematic synthesised vocals a’la Daft punk but without the heart and the album already starts to stumble before it’s even begun to walk. You could easily remove the drumbeats and it could become some of Phil Collins’ earlier, cornier post-Genesis work.

Re-hashing familiar beats for his own ends, I Can Be takes from the most unlikely source of All Saints’ Pure Shores but it doesn’t feel referential; it just feels as if he knowingly stole it.

Come On Girl is the obvious club hit with it’s commercial electro properties that will propel it into the public’s subconscious, featuring obscure British club singer Luciana (known mostly for replacing the band member that wasn’t Donna Air in Crush).

There’s no argument that for a 24 year old, he’s incredibly well accomplished but it seems that he is better off resuming writing for others instead of for himself. Expect this album to fade neatly from your memory and to see his name relegated to liner notes rather than album covers.
