DJ Mehdi is a French hip-hop and film score DJ.
In the mid 90's he was part of several French hip-hop groups as a DJ. This release however, is only his second solo album. On first impressions his style is reminiscent of a mix of DJ Spooky and an ambient Chemical Brothers.
Straight away it's obvious that DJ Mehdi isn't afraid of trying new things and his palette of sounds is very ecclectic. Jumping from film score style acoustic guitar and piano in Busy Being Born, to 80's synthesiser drum beats and keyboard sounds in I Am Somebody.
With further listening there does seem to be an imbalance though, with an over abundance of those aforementioned quirky retro synth noises. This becomes boring quickly due to the fact that a lot of artists are trying to revive this type of thing when it was already done to death twenty-or-more years ago.
It’s sad to say that most of the songs (barring Busy Being Born), all sound too similar to distinguish between. By Pony Rocking, it's become blatantly apparent that DJ Mehdi’s songs are random mashups of synth noises and horrible synthestic drumbeats, with occasional silly vocal samples covered with a vocoder.
It’s very Daft Punk but a quirkier and less listenable version. If you want weird ecclectic electronic music, try listening to artists like Fourtet, DJ Shadow and Dntel instead.
