Envelopes
Here Comes The Wind

A good album can be a bit of a challenge to listen to sometimes.

Not a challenge in an un-enjoyable sense, but in a way that it requires multiple listens for someone to fully figure out, understand and indulge in its musical, lyrical and ideological layers.

Envelopes' new album is the kind of record that you can imagine people listening to in such a way. Here Comes the Wind is a dense and multi-coloured journey through the minds of the Swedish and French combo – and in many ways has the feel of a really indie record.

The album's opener, the recent single Party, sets the precedent for the rest of album, with its peculiar, funny and melodic sound that twists and turns in all directions during its three and a half minutes. Second track Freejazz takes their music in another direction, with co-vocalist Audrey Pic actually singing in tongues at one point over the distinctly grungey backing.

Previous single Life on the Beach is another highlight, with its creeping insistent groove and cool swagger, while another Pic-led song Boat is a gentle and affecting strumalong. Put On Hold is also an excellent electro-pop tune that sounds like a mash-up between Radiohead's Kid A and the music on Nintendo games.

If you like your rock music straight-laced and serious, there may not be much for you to indulge in here. However, people with open minds on how bands can skew and misshape common ideas on how music should work may fall in love when they give this a listen.

While it is an often messy and confusing listen – think of the band as a guitar-based, European version of the Guillemots – Envelopes' flights of fancy never get in the way of a good tune. The music is always tuneful, while the endearing vocals of the aforementioned Ms Pic and partner-in-crime Henrik Orrling are always a pleasure on the ear.

Picking up a copy of this record may change all of your beliefs on what really makes great music.
