In the past year the music world has been graced with the come back of girl power.

We aren’t just talking about the Spice Girls reunion. We are talking about the arrival into the mainstream of female fronted bands such as Paramore and The Gossip who have made a very firm presence in the music world.

Flyleaf’s self-titled debut album has what would expect of a band that has been hotly tipped to be the next big alternative thing. It’s full of catchy songs, with mediocre breakdowns and lyrics that are full of teenage angst.

However, this band is following in the alternative-metal’s female-fronted bands such as Lacuna Coil, Arch Enemy - Even Evanescence have a lot to live up to after the success of such bands. But nothing about this band seems original; their music has roots and hints of their fellow Christian Rockers such as 3 Doors Down and Breaking Benjamin, even their front cover of the album has a remarkable resemblance to that of Breaking Benjamin’s album Phobia.

Getting down the actual album, there are some stand-out tracks that you could pick out as the singles from the album tracks, the opener I’m So Sick is obviously catchy with the thrashing guitars and thunderous drums, but the vocals coming from Lacey Mosley as ones that have an odd tone of the higher pitch of Avril Lavigne in I’m With You.

Moving on to the next two singles that have already been released - Fully Alive and All Around Me - demonstrate that even though this band maybe classed as just another band for the Kerrang! Nation, when the listener gets to the end the album to the bonus acoustic tracks the talent and team-work that this band has shines through to make the songs more that just screeching and half attempted break downs, but music with meaning.

When fourth song Cassie is stripped back to its simple vocals and guitar, it makes the music and words have more meaning: “All heads are bowed in silence to remember her last sentence. She answered him knowing what would happen her last words still hanging in the air” This song about a broken girl who takes her life loses its meaning in its real version, only when the core of the song remains does the emotion and intensity shine through.

All in all this album is one that shows a new band with an obvious fan base, but for the older alternative music lovers it will all just feel like déjà vu.
