Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly
@ KoKo

Being politicised and being a musician is not something that is entirely special.

Being politicised and being a good musician is another kettle of fish altogether, and that is in essence what sets Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly apart from their peers.

That is why as a live act Get Cape tread such a thin line being preachy and informative, between a political rally and a gig. For the most part on Friday they got it right, giving the fans everything that they would have come for - all the hits and a sneak preview of the new album.

Bounding onto the stage to WWE superstar Chris Jericho’s entrance music and dressed like they had watched The Blues Brothers one too many times, Sam Duckworth, the man behind Get Cape and his band quickly launched into new album material in the shape of Waiting for the Monster to Drown.

It became apparent over the course of the next hour and twenty minutes that judging by the songs that they played tonight, the album Searching for the Hows and Whys was going to be worth the wait. Taking a heavier direction than previous effort The Chronicles of a Bohemian Teenager, Duckworth seems to have covered any overly political message behind a crunching guitar and prominent percussion.

But that wasn’t really what the crowd had come to see. What they wanted were moments like when the opening melody to I Spy came leaking out of Duckworth’s guitar and they knew that in less than two minutes the exceedingly high roof of KoKo would be hearing “lalalolalala” that would fill them with the joys that only a collective sing-song can bring.

Duckworth’s movement and banter were the marks of a performer who had arrived at a place in his life where he felt comfortable. Whilst Introducing Call Me Ishmael, Duckworth regaled the crowd with the tale of him and the band beginning skateboarding again and simply enjoying life. Behind the screams and whoops of recognition from the crowd, it was hard not to be impressed with how far Duckworth has come over the last two years.

But it wouldn’t be a Get Capegig if there wasn’t a message, and it was delivered just before Once More With Feeling with a request to keep trying to make a difference to the world. Somehow you get the feeling though that as much as the crowd love the songs and the music, they are not really in tune with what Get Capewant to achieve.

But one man isn’t going to be able to change their opinions is he? Not when all they really want to do is scream “BaBaBaBa” as loud as they can. At least they got what they wanted.
