The Wave Pictures
@ The Enterprise

The days of gigs in smoky backrooms of pubs would usually be considered extinct.

Not so for the Wave Pictures, who have just completed a residency in such a room - the Enterprise to be more specific - and if the last night was anything to go by then a repeat residency could well be in the offing.

With only one or two official releases under their belt with their label Moshi Moshi, you might think they’re short of fans - not so. The North London pub was bursting at the seams, ready to hear the three boys plus violinist swoon out songs laced with what would seem like nonsense lyrics, but somehow still carry meaning.

These include but are not limited to; songs about being blonde, the nature of marmalade and the Blackpool tower. All delivered with an indie sensibility that ensured that the band is not laughed off stage before they have the chance to prove their talent.

Dave Tattersall’s voice invites comparison to The Coral and Talking Heads but it soon becomes apparent that these comparisons are based only on superficial listening and not on Tattersall’s true talents – a clever wordsmith and an able musician.

But it’s not all about him. Accompanied by bass and a drummer for most of the evening, the band’s full sound is an even greater achievement when this small number of bodies on stage is taken into consideration.

To push the boat out even further, Tattensall started the evening on his acoustic guitar playing through I Remember and I Live In A Blonde House, before swapping for an electric guitar - a decision met with whoops by the crowds.

The band were later accompanied by a violinist on stage; a violinist who already has appeared on one single for the band and is scheduled to appear on a number. This led into the last song of the night and the current single I Love You Like A Madman; a bass heavy number of passionate love which fills the room and its occupant with the feeling that Tattensall has more than fulfilled the role of the narrator, sweating heavily as he left the stage.

Operating a slowly, slowly approach to their rise, The Wave Pictures are slowly creating a wave (sorry...) within the music industry, the songs which they currently bark out are a world away from even the songs recorded less than a year ago.

Maybe in a year from now they’ll be a name rather than a picture (with poor puns included).
