Aesop Rock returns with the moody and haunting title track from his forthcoming new album, which is due in August.
Critical acclaim has never been hard to come by for the New York city MC and from this track it is very easy to see why.
The atmospheric piano-led loop that the track is tailored around is wonderfully creepy yet relaxing backing for his rhymes to flow over.
It’s also refreshing to hear an acclaimed hip-hop artist who isn’t well known on these shores stretching himself into a relatively commercial sound without the quality of his lyrics taking a turn for the worse.
His thoughts on life, death and responsibility for your actions dominate the track, but never drag it into the realms of a depressing dirge. In fact, this is a deadly serious, but deeply compelling choice of single.
It may be too intense for the average single buyer, so don’t expect this to troubling the top 10 anytime soon. However, this is exactly the kind of tune that will see Aesop Rock’s reputation for brilliant hip-hop grow and it’s a record that will have well and truly whetted his current fanbase’s appetite for his new LP. Great stuff.
