Air
Mer Du Japon

After the incredibly impressive Pocket Symphony LP, there seemed to be songs more worthy of being singles than Mer du Japon, which seems to be overshadowed by the rest of the album of its origin.

For example, Photograph would’ve probably made a far greater single.

That isn’t to say that Mer du Japon is without its charms. It’s the kind of dancy track you’ve come to expect from Air – multi-instrumental magic, french female vocals and a mid-tempo beat to maintain attention and interest.

The keyboards add much needed hooks into the mix with the tracks’ breakdown consisting of ocean noise as the instruments fade out and eventually wash back onto the shore.

As always, you have to love the bassline. Air have a very distinct way of writing cool sounding bass parts, and it’s never steered them in a wrong direction.

In many of their songs the bass is often a driving force and this song is no exception, with the bass adding mood and nervous pacing in places.

Air fans will find this single a great addition to their collection, but if you’re not quite as hardcore as those people, just buy Pocket Symphony. It’s worth your time and money, plus it’ll remind you of just how fantastic their previous album, Talkie Walkie, is.
