Amiina feat. Lee Hazelwood
Hilli (At The Top Of The World)

Traditionally a backing strings group for acclaimed band Sigur Ros, but now the all female Icelandic quartet have taken flight.

They’ve even cemented their name by stamping the vocals of legendary vocalist Lee Hazlewood upon this, their second single from their 2007 album Kurr. Hazlewood, known most for penning the song These Boots Are Made For Walking by Nancy Sinatra, recorded the vocals at his home shortly before he died.

The lyrics themselves act as a narrative prose, as if you’re listening to an epilogue of a Hazlewood’s life itself and for many of us, we would have missed the big ending. The calming tone of his vocals add to the epic feeling that washes over you, a euphoric sense of what you are doing is right, and no one can tell you otherwise.

Nods can be heard throughout to Sigur Ros in both temperament and an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of using many instruments to make their music as full and rich as possible, to the extent that it can sometimes be too sweet to take down.

This is where Hazlewood’s distinct baritone resonates throughout the track preventing it from becoming too minimalist in style, and brings it back to make you realise that isn’t just made for the background but can stand on its own merits.

Seeing as Iceland has a tendency to produce artists that are soundtrack friendly, and here it is no different, a full lullaby that makes the day seem that much brighter.

Amiina pay a solemn tribute to Hazlewood by including a cover of Leather & Lace…that allows the band to tap into a little of his cowboy psychedelica, and add to their already impressive repertoire.
