If this really is the sound of drum and bass from Brazil, then there’s going to be an extreme cold front heading their way soon.
The reason is all too simple. It’s so cool it’s sub-zero.
Its key quality lies in the fact that it is an uncomplicated uncluttered set of songs. A-side Nebulosa and double A-side Segunda Feira both follow the same drum and bass sample that feels similar to Pendulum’s more sparse and relaxed moments, but both go on different – but beautiful – routes.
Nebulosa has a looping piano that rolls in and out like the tide at Rio de Janeiro’s golden beaches, and the subtle drum section that interjects at a mid point keeps you on the look out for what may be about to arrive next, as is the sudden spontaneity of it all.
The already mentioned simplicity somehow compels you to get up and dance, even though there is hardly any change, and the only vocal on show is a simple “woo!” after the bridge.
Segunda Feira keeps the beat but adds Portuguese lyrics over the top, and considering this should hinder a release in the UK, it actually adds a considerable amount to it. Music crosses boundaries, and this is a very bold example of that fact. After all, if it can work for Rammstein…
It could be a great ending for this years’ Ibiza season, as a guitar gets introduced and as a result takes the song to a spine-tingling climax. This isn’t just a great song, it’s a song to create memories to.
After all of that too, it’s supporting a brilliant charity in the form of Bottletop. So there you go. A great set of tunes, and good karma for the day by donating money to charity. It doesn’t get any better than that.
