Ali Campbell feat. Bitty McLean
Would I Lie To You

Breathing some new life into an old track, Ali Campbell and Bitty McLean’s collaboration creates the Marmite effect; either you love it or you hate it.

UB40’s front man has always strived for some solo success so presumably the album that’s full of huge reggae and soul singers is to get him into the mainstream market and some well deserved success.

McLean’s voice is impressive but its nothing incredibly special. Without the distinctive voice of Campbell creeping in it was sounding a lot like a karaoke pub recording. Combined, their voices do link together to create a bittersweet mix between reggae sounds now and from the UB40 era.

The single itself feels like there is something missing. We’ve had the onslaught of Radio One and its Live Lounge so we have expectations from our covers. But this song just doesn’t cut it.

There is not a real mark put on the track to define it from all the other covers floating around of Would I Lie To You? So there’s a doubt that it’s going to stick in anyone’s head as the best version they have ever heard.

But if you’re after some easy listening and something you’ll automatically know all the words to, this could be right up your street.
