Cat The Dog
I'm A Romantic

In this crazy mixed up world, some groups that have achieved major worldwide success are looked at as a great yardstick to be compared to, whereas some are looked at with immeasurable scorn.

Nirvana are generally seen in the latter. From The Vines to Nine Black Alps, the legacy of Kurt and co is still lingering over music like a bad smell. You can’t deny their impact, but when it comes to bands like Cat The Dog, it puts anyone in a tricky situation.

Judging the band on their actual merits though, they are loud, dirty and as abrasive as the Tasmanian Devil covered in glasspaper. The heavy sludgy bass and drums are muddier than Woodstock in ’94 and the guitars are scratchier than a cat with fleas – with no pun intended.

Chris Mellian’s vocals are tortured and rasping, and can on both songs on show here, I’m A Romantic and Devil In Me, sound slightly similar to Paul Gautrey from The Glitterati – although with a demented twist.

This two-track won’t see the band fly into the charts – it’s more likely to see teenyboppers having nightmares than rocking – but it’s assured to pick up rabid fans who are ready to riot. It’s deviant, raw and stinging, and somewhat great.

With a bit more musical manoeuvring, this band could be worth keeping a deviant eye on…
