The Cribs
Moving Pictures

The mouthy Brothers Jarman are developing a reputation based on their huge chips on their shoulders at the moment, and the unfortunate thing for them is that their sniping about scenesters and fakes seems to have diverted attention away from the fact they have written some rather spectacular songs recently.

Moving Pictures’ three excellent minutesploughs the same charming melancholia of Maximo Park’s Going Missing, but with a bit more volume and a shout-a-long middle eight. It is also timely reminder that The Cribs have come up with some damn fine tunes on their third LP, Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever.

A jarring electric guitar opens the song, but the mood soon takes a more reflective turn with Gary swooning into the track with the arresting lyric You'll sleep tonight/dream dreams where I would die’. Few singles will have a more arresting intro this year.

The chorus is also a blinder, referencing the band’s famous (anti-)love of ‘fakes’ and ‘liars’ to describe how little they care for the person (a former girlfriend perhaps?) they’re firing this tuneful riposte towards. It’s also one of the most singalong moments in the band’s arsenal.

Only a handful of bands ever really get the chance to back up their cocky, outspoken attitudes with great tunes to match. After three albums of trying, The Cribs may be on the verge of joining that club. Great stuff.
