Craig David’s on the rise.
Or at least he was back in the early noughties when he burst onto the UK’s booming garage and pop scene with his debut album Born To Do it, released in 2000. His desperate return for 2008 is disappointing track 6 Of 1 Thing. It’s an amicable attempt to win back his fans and maybe his dignity, one that failed for poor Craig.
This upbeat rip-off of Amerie’s brilliant One Thing has not digested very well; there is however hope that a new audience of tasteless teenagers may pick up on the track’s catchiness and fast pace.
The track starts as it means to go on, which is consequently nothing and nowhere. 6 Of 1 Thing is a distorted mess and completely over the top. It’s hard to work out if it’s R&B or swing. When the radio edit was first played, it sounded as if the disc was skipping. In fact, it was just that too many instruments were fighting to be heard therefore attempts to make an interesting introduction just failed miserably.
On the plus side it will be a radio success because it isn’t offensively loud or annoying; it just isn’t very good.
