I have an idea… let’s make dirty electro-dance that spans decades!
Not just a cheesy stab at the lyrics: “I have an idea/That you are here/I had the idea/That you were near”, but an actual statement of intent from Digitalism. Idealistic gives a sampled tapestry about what has been good (and overused) in dance throughout the last twenty-four years.
Gelled together from a mixture of dirty, brazen modern day beats and synths that are bound to loosen thousands of revellers bowels across the nation when played in clubs at full whack, there are influences from the horrifying early nineties to the glorious early eighties.
Listen closely and you’ll hear a beat that’s not too distinctly similar from New Order’s Blue Monday, and you’ll also hear electro-drums that could be lifted from Josh Wink, through to any dance track from the era of Channel 4’s The Word. Or, from early Take That - it just depends what you find more credible…
Minor gripes aside, it’s a rapturously uptempo and high-octane thrill from start to finish, with a middle eight fit for hand clapping opportunists at live shows, to bomb dropping hooks and tweaks.
For anyone who is familiar with Kitsune, it’s no surprise to see the French label involved with this release, as it smacks of everything they get their dirty hands on. If you’re off to see them live, make sure you pack some toilet roll, just to be sure.
