Don Cash offer a new-disco attempt that just doesn’t seem to break the mould.
Disco Wreck hints at a track to dance to, with a bouncy sounding bass and a repetitive drum beat that hints at trance, but in the end the track embodies its lyrics and titles – “just another disco wreck.”
The last syllable of every verse line gets very annoying after a while, with the pitch trailing upward and just not being pulled off effectively enough to be enjoyed. A remix follows shortly afterward that does little to nothing differently.
While you could hear either of these versions on any club night out, it would just fit right in with the rest of the noise with a crap beat that’s played and eventually fade into the background after your fifth drink.
Hey There kicks in and it soon becomes apparent that the same conventions are being applied and doesn’t really show off anything new for the Don Cash repertoire.
It seems to attempt to mimic the sensuality of Goldfrapp’s Black Cherry work, but comes very short of an effective result due to its lack of orchestration or instruments in general – the vocals are very dry and the echo filters do it absolutely no favours.
However, the final track, Don’t Crash, is more reminiscent of ‘80s electropop and makes a better attempt than all the other songs found on this CD. Unfortunately, by the time it comes on you’re at the end of the disc and finding yourself very disappointed.
