The Dykeenies
Stitches

Ambition is an admirable thing to have in a personality, and a necessity in a band to succeed.

The Dykeenies are a group that have ambition in the bucketload. Their debut single from their anticipated album Nothing Means Everything is a song that slowly seeps into your mind, and once its there, it makes you wonder how you ever missed it in the first place.

With a full string section backing up the band, Stitches goes from a mid-range mid-career Bloc Party tribute act into a group that obviously want to scale unprecedented heights – and obviously their record label agrees.

The band, which hails from Cumbernauld, Scotland, had only a handful of singles and EP’s to their name before this release, and it starts to show what King Tut’s and XFM saw in the group with this accomplished effort. It may not be roaring up the charts, but there are indications as to why this is.

Great songs can often smack you straight in the face from the offing, and when they do, it’s fairly safe to say they’ll hit major paydirt. Stitches is a different kettle of fish, as it worms its way into your thought after a bit of due patience and diligence.

Even with a buzz saw of a bass backing up proceedings and some poetically powerful wordplay, it’s just lacking the cutting edge for the big time.

Like any great relationship though, you need to give it some time and space to grow. If you give The Dykeenies the chance, you might just fall in love with them.
