The Louisville rockers return and sound heavier and angrier on their first single from the album Black Earth Tiger.
The single has a dark and sinister style to it throughout, from the heavy guitar rifts pumping through the track and the way the lyrics snarled and spat out by frontman Matt Breen.
Emanuel’s latest single is a preview to the new album, and is a mix of grunge and hardcore rock, which is a far cry from the more emotional, youthful sounding Soundtrack To A Headrush, released in 2005.
Cottonmouth has hints of sex, Armageddon and even rape within. A line of choice says: “Out go the lights and she says she's so helpless, like and animal with all of its legs broke”. Heavy stuff indeed, and on paper seems to resemble the song You Can’t Rape The Willing from their previous Soundtrack… album.
There are a lot of elements of the Deftones in the track, and the angst-ridden album may well signal a change in maturity and style. Whether it is a change for the better though, is yet to be seen, and on this offering a lot more is needed to reach the top.
