King Creosote is back with an unexpectedly refined single from his latest album Bombshell.
At first inspection, you could be forgiven for thinking you were listening to the latest Keane release – but don’t let that put you off just yet. The very, ahem, commercial sounding Home In A Sentence floats on its airy - perhaps a little over-produced – blend of guitar sounds and simple piano melody.
Kenny Anderson - King Creosote’s real life alter-ego - is left without his usual ‘rough around the edges’ style as he appears to lean towards a number-32-in-the-charts type radio song.
Home In A Sentence plods lightly along until we finally reach the distinctly average chorus. Nothing particularly catchy but at least the beat still keeps you tapping your foot. There is a constant sense, however, that the song isn’t really going anywhere. The listener is left waiting for a climax point that, like most post, isn’t delivered.
A big positive though is Anderson’s characteristic singing style. His accent breaks through here and there, whilst he jumps from high to low keeping the listener engaged. His vocals fit in perfectly with the style and flow of Home In A Sentence and they are, in truth, what makes the song listenable.
On the whole, Home In A Sentence is one for your mum. A pleasant, simple tune with a regular beat. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s worth a listen if you’re a relaxed Sunday driver but don’t rely on it to perk you up before a night out. You’ll be in your PJs with a mug of cocoa half way through.
