Red
Seen

This EP is the latest release from rising UK DJ Red (real name Tom Calvert), and features the original version of the song Seen along with three remixes of the track.

The original mix features the use of scratching to create layers of beats and riffs. The remix (by hip-hop collective Kids in Tracksuits)is the most similar to the original, with extra sampling and rising/falling blips throughout the track. These help to add a little more interest and variety of sound to reduce the rather repetitive nature of the original mix.

Anyone who is yet to hear the Playsatan mix of Seen will almost certainly do so in the near future, as a deal has been signed by Sony to use the track in the ads for the PSP throughout this year. This remix gives the track a much more electro/dance feel to it. And as with the Kids In Tracksuits mix, this builds on the range of riffs and sampling used in the original.

Initially the track doesn’t greatly resemble the original version but after a few seconds the distinctive Seen scratch riff kicks back in. There’s even a smattering of what sounds like harmonica in section towards the end, which adds another interesting dynamic to the song. It’s not hard to imagine this mix being a hit in the more fashionable clubs.

Red is not your typical DJ, as he has experimented with the concept of using turntables as the lead instrument in a live band, and it is the mix of Seen performed by his band Full Fat that is by far the most accessible track on this EP. The sound created by the fusion of the guitars, drums and turntables must surely be one of the most diverse being produced by any artist in any genre in British music.

The musicianship on this effort is also first class with the guitars ranging from catchy as hell riffs to wailing solos, yet never once sounding out of place with the turntable. There is definitely something on this track that should appeal to nearly any modern music fan no matter what their taste.
