Jimmy Carr is one of the biggest faces in comedy – literally. Look at his face, it’s like the moon…
Not a joke at his expense, but a paraphrased version of one of the first lines on this Gag Reflex tour by the man born in Limerick, Ireland. Known for his incredibly deadpan, dry and satirical humour, Jimmy really isn’t for the easily offended. He’s also incredibly quick witted, and can shoot hecklers down at a steady and frightening pace.
Anyone who saw Jimmy on the Gag Reflex tour during the back end of 2006 will instantly recognise the material on show – just like a live music gig, you often see the same material in the same parts of the show. It isn’t as tiresome as it may sound, as the jokes on show are barrelled out at such a frequent rate that it takes repeated viewings to even recall them all.
What’s more, many retain their humour levels long after the first laugh, feeling of severe repulsion or distinct feeling of moving closer to hell for finding it all rather hilarious. There are a few letdowns, like the wine joke first aired after Kinga’s exploits on Big Brother 6, which Carr still uses, but these are in the minority.
After all, if you can let a musician fluff a few notes here and there when it’s live, then it’s only right to give a comedian a couple of Mulligan’s during a stand-up set.
With comedy, it’s always about timing and presentation. With Jimmy, it’s almost second nature. His pauses and Standard English dialect leaves you within no doubt where the joke starts and finishes, but also his razor sharp intellect gives him an incredible upper hand, and when he openly tells people that he has fornicated their mother, it’s safe to say he could probably give a good retort if challenged.
He once again returns to London’s Bloomsbury Theatre, where he provides another classic performance that has seen him branch into the Guinness Book of Records for the first Second Life gig, which was performed to an online audience. It also appears as one of the near hour-long batch of extras, that include his mini sketch series, Thumbing In A Softie.
Again, attendees of the 2006 tour will be aware of some of these sketches that appeared at the start of the show. Even the Bo Selecta! parody that brilliantly started the Off The Telly tour in ’05 rears its head in the extras.
His Soccer Six antics deserve some major praise too, by bringing along a team of absolute no-hopers and naming themselves after the nation of North Korea – And no, there’s no point in even thinking of a fairytale ending in this story.
With nearly two-and-a-half hours of footage available for every viewer, it’s a no-brainer as to if you should purchase the latest Carr DVD. Whether your moral compass will accept it is another thing...
