This may very well be a DVD that inspires thousands of new DJs to approach the decks.
After watching the film Wild Style (which features an absolutely fantastic soundtrack) Mr Krush rushed out to buy some turntables and the rest, they say, is history. And to think he could just as easily stayed a member of the Yakuza, leaving the hip-hop world without his wizardry. Things most definitely turned out for the best.
The DVD opens with Krush showing off his technical skills in front of a cityscape. And the man is quite unbelievable. It’ll make you green with envy even if you’ve never approached decks in your life. Any turntable tech-heads are bound to be impressed and hip-hop fans will definitely not be disappointed.
As far as documentaries about musicians go, you really do have the full works. It covers everything you could want to know about Krush and his music, from his introduction into the hip-hop world up to the present day. It covers his collaborations, which surely assure him he is one of the most sought after DJs and producers in the industry. His brand of trip-hop is highly unique, with a lot of ambient work that is endlessly enjoyable.
The live footage is simply must-watch material. I don’t think there’d be a hip-hop fanatic alive that wouldn’t appreciate what he does for the genre – which is perpetuate it and bring it to higher levels. His use of sampling seems to have an endless range, from classical guitar to jazz horns, to soundscapes. While he may not have created those pieces of music himself, he does well to cut-and-paste these parts to bring a completely new sonic canvas for everyone to enjoy.
It feels like DJ Krush’s focus in bringing this DVD is to do what Wild Style did for him. His life was changed forever by music, and if he can do the same for even just a handful of people then he’ll have done his job brilliantly. To give young people inspiration and a different path in life. He seems like a very selfless man who concentrates solely on the music he writes and his role as entertainer for his masses. And the fan vox-pops prove that his music has a high yet underrated impact.
Make no mistake, DJ Krush is a very rare kind of genius. Nobody will ever be able to imitate or replace him and if he ever stops making music the world will be a slightly less amazing place because of it. You’d be hard pressed to find somebody who puts as much soul and emotion into the decks as he does. Ko No Michi is an ideal introduction to Krush’s world and comes highly recommended.
