Mika
Live: In Cartoon Motion

This DVD Celebrates Mika as an artist and an entertainer.

There are around 150 minutes of footage here with great extras, which includes a really personal documentary on the man himself.

Live In Cartoon Motion was filmed last summer in Paris where Mika sings in front of 4.000 fans and plays the 14 songs off his latest album. He starts really well with him singing one of his successes, Relax (Take It Easy) as he shouts, jumps, interacts with the public and with his band - a perfect entertainer.

Then in the next song Big Girl (You Are Beautiful) enters in, right in the middle of the song they introduce some ‘big girls’ of their own, all dressed like cowboy girls with red cowboy hats dancing that are there to demonstrate that big girls can also be sexy and beautiful too.

Mika tries to make his public feel comfortable and the crowd responds, singing every line of every song. The concert has some highlights like when he covers Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This). In the middle of the track, he jumps on the drum and plays in tandem with his drummer. Unpredictably, he didn’t fall and didn’t lose his rhythm before playing away on an aluminum bin.

The concert ends with Lollipop with a funny performance that had all the band members dressed as teddy bears, elephants, and rabbits – even a chicken.

In the extras you can find five bonus videos of his singles like the famous Grace Kelly and Love Today as well as three live and acoustic songs. Also included is a really good documentary called A Long Way From Home.

In this documentary we can see Mika talking about all the concerts across the world that he has already performed in like Berlin, Milan, Munich and Paris to name a few, whilst talking about the experiences and the stress that is to travel around the world and perform every day.

In this documentary we can also see another part of Mika that we didn’t know, like his thoughts of the world and what he thinks about all the success that he’s had with Life In A Cartoon Motion. He is asked what he thinks that he will be doing in ten years and he says that he imagined doing the same thing as he wonders out loud if one day he will stop needing to sing Grace Kelly at every gig.

Mika is the kind of artist that we will love or hate - there is no in-between. He has an almost feminine voice when he achieves the top end of his high notes. Sometimes it can sound like he is screaming instead of singing, but that’s because he sings to express himself and not to make an impression.

The images of the concert do not give us the clear idea that it is being performed in the L’Olyimpia Stadium as well as what the real scale is for an artist to perform in this kind of place. But to summarise, the entire DVD is well constructed and easy to manage.
